Chapter 17
Noelle woke and the cabin, as usual, was quiet. No doubt the girls were already out and about. And Cade? Well, he, no surprise there either, was long gone too. She kicked one of the couch cushions that he’d brought upstairs to create a makeshift bed out of the way. Prior to the girls’ night, she’d thought she couldn’t possibly see less of him than she already was. The past three days since they’d had sex—and she wanted to roll up into a little ball of regret and raging hormones whenever she thought about it—had shown her that no, she was completely wrong about that. He was like a ghost or something, an entity other people referred to occasionally and that moved the odd dish or towel, but that you never actually saw. And that was a good thing, right? Absolutely. Of course.
It occurred to her that she was protesting too much, even to herself. The idea made her frown.
She showered, did her face, then blow-dried and flat ironed her hair instead of just pulling it into the quick ponytail she’d come to appreciate for its simplicity, speed and coolness the past few days. Then she slowly—and a bit resentfully, if she was honest—got dressed in full support underwear, slacks and a silk blouse. She was going into town to do some shopping for Jo, then meeting Caren for lunch, sans Eva and Emily—a request from her mother-in-law that made her wonder what was going on.
Outside, Destroy-a-con leapt to his feet in delight at seeing her and bounded over, the light chain that bound him jingling on its tether. She noticed his food and water dishes had been filled and made a mental note to thank the girls later.
In a flash, she extended her arm and held her palm up. Just in time, too. Mid-jump, he sank back to his haunches.
“Down!” she said, even though it was kind of dumb because he already was. “Good dog.” That last line was a stretch, but it made him wiggle with what she interpreted as happiness, so obviously he was starting to understand her. She gave his silky ears a rub.
She was not a dog person (understatement of the year!), but even to her, it was bizarre that no one had responded to any of the posters she and the girls had stapled to power poles along the highway or to the Facebook notice Jo had posted. Destroy-a-con looked expensive and well cared for. Clean, he was very handsome—if unbelievably huge. And Jo figured he was young, not much older than a year or so. Someone should be looking for him. Ah, well, two more days and Noelle would contact the pound. It didn’t make her happy and she said a little prayer that the owner would make an appearance.
Destroy-a-con gave a soft whine and looked up at her expectantly, but continued to sit perfectly still. His fur was still soft and shining from the brushing she’d given him when she first put him on the lead.
